If you don't understand what "Passing by reference" is, here's a simple script
that should make it quite clear:

$bar = "blah";
echo $bar;
function foo(&$string)
{
return $string = strtoupper($string);

echo $bar;

Execute this code and you'll know it in a blink of an eye ;-)
