I think you missinterpreted him.. As he did say this is insignificant.
You are talking about these breaks:
switch($name) {
case "ed"
break;
...
}
Whereas he's saying this break is not required:
switch($name) {
default:
break;
}
Like in C/C++. Although, the sentence does equivocate the way you interpreted it perfectly.
