To prevent people from pulling their hair out, I'd like to point out the slightly
underdocumented fact that PHP, more often than not, automatically applies addslahes() to all user
input, like the data in $_GET and $_POST, and what is derived from it. That means it'll add
backslashes in front of every backslash and single quote.
Therefore, I'd like to point towards the user notes in the section "Configuration",
at <http://www.php.net/configuration>. The
function get_magic_quotes_gpc() allows you to check out at runtime, if this is indeed the case.
