For anyone interested in execing in the background I figured out how to do it. I wrote a
small C program (You can see it at http://home.i1.net/~naken/mikehup.c) that forks a
process and closes off STDIN,STDOUT,STDERR).. then all you do is call exec with:
exec("/path/to/mikehup whatever &"); and PHP will come back and your process will run
in the background :) this is the only way i've been able to do it...
