I have php 4.1 and 5.0b and floatval doesn't work with either of them. a very simple workaround
for this is to use (float)
<?php
$a="1.1a";
echo (float)$a;
?>
<?php
$a="1.1a";
$a=(float)$a;
echo $a;
?>
