The CPU load when using GZIP can get quite high with forum scripts like PHPBB and XMBFORUM. My
server is a Celeron 1.2, 512 megs RAM. When there are around 30 concurrent users on the forums, CPU
load from gzip can jump to around 40%, which is not good considering the server is also running
MySQL. Because of this, response time drops dramatically, which is precisely the opposite of the
desired effect.
