INSTALL document in the source distribution of php-4.3.3 inform these instructions for installation:
$./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs
$make
$make install
What is '--with-apxs' option?
Another thing: Once configured php, the results inform that is convenient use
'--with-mysql=/path/to/mysql' if php is installed as a module, and I ran:
$./configure --with-mysql=/path/to/my/mysql --with-apxs
