Note that this function may return an empty string when a value is set to Off. You should use this
in conjunction with var_dump() to check if a setting is On or Off:
eg:
$val = ini_get("short_open_tag");
var_dump( $val );
This will echo string(0) "" if Off
This will echo string(1) "1" if On
Check var_dump() on how to pipe the output to a string variable using the output buffering
functions.
(Examined on 4.2.0 Win32.)
