I just got PHP 4.2.3 installed with IMAP support.
My problem was pam_start/pam_end.
Just compile c-client (doesn´t matter which version, I have imap-2002.RC2) without PAM support
(e.g. make slx SSLTYPE=unix).
You don´t need to run make install just create lib and include in c-client directory.
Then run PHP configure --with-imap=/path/to/the/c-client-dir and --with-imap-ssl.
Works great for me. Hope this helps...
