Java is not interpreted when run in most modern virtual machines. It is 'just-in-time
compiled', that is the bytecode is translated to native machine code prior to the first
execution. Other implementations exist that translate the bytecode to machine code in advance
(although I don't believe such a system would work well with JSP as you would find it hard to
add / remove pages...).
