You should not use something like this to parse postgresql date output. You should ask postgresql to
return the numeric format. You can do this with EXTRACT. For example
SELECT EXTRACT(EPOCH FROM current_timestamp);
should give you the same thing as time(). Check the postgresql docs for more variations on this
theme.
