i think rendering ttf text on truecolor images doesn't support hinting properly, thus rendering
small size type results in lines with sub-pixel thickness, which antialiasing turns into almost
completely transparent pixels. the problem doesn't occur with non-truecolor images, as there is
no antialiasing there.
