I finally got php working on apache2 with the following:
adding
AddType application/x-php .php
Action application/x-php /cgi-bin/php-handler.cgi
to apache's configuration and then creating the
file php-handler.cgi as
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/php-cgi /var/www/html/$QUERY_STRING
Please note that this is NOT secure, but it works.
