Note that creating a reference to a non-existing array element causes that element to be created
with a null value. For example:
var_dump($username); // => NULL
var_dump($session); // => NULL
$username =& $session['username'];
var_dump($username); // => NULL
var_dump($session);
// => array(1) { ["username"]=> &NULL }
