A simple test I did to check if the variables were linked like a chain or if all variables
referenced directly back to the same value.
<?php
$x = 5;
$p =& $x;
$q =& $p;
echo "x:$x, p:$p, q:$q<br>";
unset($p);
echo "x:$x, p:$p, q:$q<br>";
?>
outputs :
x:5, p:5, q:5
x:5, p:, q:5
