Of course, this works for checkboxes too.
Just call all your checkboxes the same array name
(example: input type="checkbox" Name="choices[]" Value="xyz") and
change the value for each box.
I've had no problem using POST_VARS with this
($choices=$HTTP_POST_VARS('choices');
