When register_globals is turned off (as it always should be) a good way to check for request
variables is to use the isset function with the ternary operator.
$var = ( isset($_REQUEST['var']) ? $_REQUEST['var'] : '' )
I've used this extensivley on http://www.pollenation.net and in combination with the smarty
template system and apache rewrite, handles all of the navigation (directories are turned into
request variables which are then checked for in the application routine).
