Be careful that !== is not the exact opposite of ==
While == checks only the contents, !== checks both contents and type.
The following example will print out both "is empty" and "is not empty":
$a = NULL;
if ($a == "") {echo "is empty ";}
if ($a !== "") {echo "is not empty";}
