If you are running PHP as an Apache-module and nothing happens if you use flush(), check if you are
using mod_gzip!
You can disable mod_gzip per directory or you can add a new type to httpd.conf (via "AddType
application/x-httpd-php .phpx" for example - don't include .phpx-files in mod_gzip then).
Here a snippet from my httpd.conf (excluded the test-file from mod_gzip):
<IfModule mod_gzip.c>
<Location /test/flushtest.php>
mod_gzip_on no
</Location>
</IfModule>
