Note that you cannot (unfortuantely) define your own variables in php.ini and retrieve them. It
would be nice to have alternate paths defined in the php.ini and swap them on the basis of what you
are running. Don't forget that if you are running Apache, you can configure these on a domain
by domain basis (which solved my 'issue').
