Edit: Made an mistake in my previous comment, should read as:
substr(gzcompress($gzip_contents, 9) 0, -4)
And it also works without the substr/crc32/size in Opera 7.20, Konkeror 3.1, Mozilla 1.4/1.5/1.5b,
Firebird 0.6.1/0.7
