as an ASP user (which, as far as I can see, works similarly) I have found it useful sometimes to
imagine the following is happening.
1. The system assumes the whole file is PHP code
2. There is a notional ?> at the beginning of the file
3. There is a notional <?PHP at the end
4. The processor treats
?>foo<?php
as
echo("foo");
(and allows CR LF etc without confusion)
PS, I am completely naive in PHP at this stage. so I hope, if this is misleading, someone will ditch
it.
