A tip for people who do their coding on Windows:
PHP tries to talk to port 25 (SMTP) on the local machine. I set up an SSH tunnel so that port 25 on
my Windows laptop forwards, through an encrypted SSH tunnel, to port 25 on my server. So when PHP
on my laptop tries to send email via local port 25, it's actually talking to Sendmail on my
Linux server. Use Putty for this, it's great!
I discovered this by accident when I didn't expect that my local PHP would be able to send mail
out, but it was. Turns out I'd just left my mail tunnel turned on.
