A quick sidenote from my experience:
When feeding strtotime() the value "--"
(in my case, coming from a date that failed to explode() correctly),
strtotime() doesn't return -1 as expected,
but the current timestamp.
Hope this helps someone, it took me a couple of hours to find that out.
