Apache 2.x causes segmentation fault when reading .htaccess.
Before you tear your hair out, if you place the following in /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf
<Files *.html>
SetOutputFilter PHP
SetInputFilter PHP
LimitRequestBody 524288
</Files>
OR
<Files *.htm?>
SetOutputFilter PHP
SetInputFilter PHP
LimitRequestBody 524288
</Files>
to get files with extension .htm or .html to go through the PHP parser, Apache 2.x will crash when
it reads a .htaccess file containing Auth codes (actually the "Require" directive
specifically).
Instead, use this for .htm files:
<Files *.htm>
SetOutputFilter PHP
SetInputFilter PHP
LimitRequestBody 524288
</Files>
and for .html, this
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html
This applies to a RedHat 9.0 installation which uses
httpd-2.0.40-21
php-4.2.2-17
Hope this saves someone the many hours it took me to track this down.
