Overloading PHP string functions.
Sometimes, with overloaded functions, you need a way to use the non-overloaded forms (in order to
work on string bytes, not characters). I have not found a way to do this, but there is a
workaround.
You can use the mb_str* functions with "iso-8859-1" character set and it will essentially
emulate the non-overloaded functions. I needed the byte length of a multibyte string (for a
Content-Length HTTP Header) and so I do this:
$length = mb_strlen( $str, "iso-8859-1" );
