"imap_check" does not return the date of the last change of mailbox contents as
documented. It returns the current system time formatted according to RFC822 specs by the imap
client PHP was compiled against. The imap client function call looks like
"rfc822_date(date);". I've verified this from PHP release 4.1.1 back to 4.0.3pl1.
