I have found three diffrent error levels you can use:

trigger_error("The error", E_USER_ERROR); which prints out:
Fatal error: The error in /my/server/webroot/file.php on line 2

trigger_error("The error", E_USER_WARNING); which prints out:
Warning: The error in /my/server/webroot/file.php on line 2

trigger_error ("The error", E_USER_NOTICE); which prints out:
Notice: The error in /my/server/webroot/file.php on line 2
