You can also do stuff like this to allow special (non-HTML) tags to do the work of HTML:
/* Bold */
$msg = ereg_replace("\[b](.*)\[/b]", "<b>\\1</b>", $msg);
/* Slanted */
$msg = ereg_replace("\[i](.*)\[/i]", "<i>\\1</i>", $msg);
/* Underlined */
$msg = ereg_replace("\[u](.*)\[/u]", "<u>\\1</u>", $msg);
