The following code prints out 0 on PHP4.0.6/GD1.6.2+:
$img = imagecreatefromjpeg($filename);
echo imagecolorstotal($img);
imagedestroy($img);
On PHP4.1.2/GD1.8.2 it prints out 256.
It seems that imagecreatefromjpeg() convert the image to 256 colors on the latter config.
