I believe it's possible to use nl2br() to insert the <br />'s and htmlspecialchars()
to convert all " ' etc.
for example:
$mystring = $db->query();
$mystring = nl2br($mystring);
$mystring = htmlspecialchars($mystring);
echo "\n" . $mystring;
