IF you need use national characters (iso 8859-2,8 etc.) it's good way to use ldap_set_option.
It was hard job to find where is a bug ;-))). I hope that helps somebody.
ldap_set_option($ldap, LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, 3);
