Declaring a variable (actually an array) as static w/in a switch{} spun my wool for a while:
don't:

function ss() {
switch ("bug") {
case "bug" :
static $test = "xyz";
break;
default :
static $test = "abc";
}
echo $test;
}
ss(); //abc

do:

static $test;
switch ("fix") {
