Be sure to check for \n or \r in strings passed to ftp_connect. I was reading environment variables
from a file, one of which was the ftp site name without stripping \n or \r and got the following
error:
ftp_connect(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known
