Oddly enough, I am able to printout data and trigger_errors() in my shutdown function on
FreeBSD-4.9/Apache-1.3.26/PHP-4.3.1. Test code:

register_shutdown_function('foo');
function foo() {
print "printout!\n\n";
trigger_error("notice!", E_USER_NOTICE);
trigger_error("error!", E_USER_ERROR);
}
?>Normal output.
