Regarding $_SESSION can be slooowwwww:
The $_SESSION data by default is stored to the hard drive. Other than using a virtual drive you may
wish to use a drive with faster access rates or higher cache. Using a raid configuration will also
improve on performance of regular $_SESSION variables as well as the rest of your server.
