You can call all other mysql functions without the $link varaible. The following will work fine:

$link = mysql_connect('localhost'. 'user', 'pass') or
die("Can't connect');
mysql_select_db('sample');
$query = "select * from test";
mysql_query($query);
mysql_close();
?>
