I've found that one of the things that most often fails when installing PHP with GD support is
that the path to GD is specified wrong or not specified at all. The placement PHP considers to be
GD's default install dir is not what GD considers it to be, GD will most likely be installed in
/usr/local unless otherwise specified. So the parameter to pass to configure is --with-gd=/usr/local
or whereever you have put GD.
