This really needs to be cross-posted here (from is_subclass_of):
You can duplicate the functionality of is_a (for PHP versions that miss it) like so:

function is_a($anObject, $aClass) {
return get_class($anObject) == strtolower($aClass)
or is_subclass_of($anObject, $aClass);
}
?>
