just to warn people who might be using DIE() in the context of a command-line via sendmail's
smrsh: using die(), die(""), or die("string") in the smrsh environment creates a
"mysterious error" that sendmail bounces back to the sender!!! this was very hard to
debug and decidedly unpleasant for me, so i hope no one else will have to deal with this.
