You CAN run BOTH PHP4 and PHP5 on the same Apache instance.
1- Configure PHP4 with --prefix and --with-config-file-path
2- Build and install PHP4
3- On Apache, instruct to use php, php4, and phtml to application/x-httpd-php and phps to
application/x-httpd-php-source
Now comes the most important part:
4- Unpacks PHP5 source and replaces all matches of
application/x-httpd-php to application/x-httpd-php5
and application/x-httpd-php-source to application/x-httpd-php5-source
5- Configure PHP5 with --prefix and --with-config-file-path (to another dir)
6- Build and install PHP5
7- On Apache, instruct to use php5 to application/x-httpd-php5 and php5s to
application/x-httpd-php5-source
I didn't tested all enough, but this should work well.
