highlight_string not in the old deprecated <font>-Tag?
Easy:

$text = highlight_string($text, true);
$text = str_replace('<font color="', '<span style="color: ',
str_replace('</font>', '</span>', $text));
?>
Now instead of <font color="#000000">SAMPLE_TEXT</font>
there is a <span style="color: #000000">SAMPLE_TEXT</span>
