First close the output buffer (with ob_end_flush) and then enable the output buffer again (with
ob_start). It's working! (tested on php 4.3.4):

ob_end_flush();
ob_start();
sleep(5);
echo "2<br>\n";
ob_end_flush();
ob_start();
sleep(5);
echo "3";
