After quite a number of retries, and a good bit of searching the rather scattered hints, tracing
errors, slogging through makefiles, etc, etc...I wound up having to do this to get php/apache to
compile under a relatively pristine Solaris 7 environment with Apache 1.3.9 and php3-latest from Dec
8:
1. Install gcc (of course), flex and bison
2. Untar and configure Apache, then configure/make/make install php, as per the directions.
3. Enter apache-1.3.x/src/lib/expat-lite and 'make libexpat.a'. Chown/chmod/copy
libexpat.a to /usr/local/lib. You might also need to chown/chmod/copy *.h to
/usr/local/include/xml.
4. Finally, you can configure/make/make install in the apache source tree as per the PHP
instructions.
Why I needed to do that third step manually, I don't know. Maybe it's expected that I do
everything as root; I prefer to do all compilation as an unpriviledged user, then do the final
installs as root. I would've expected things to compile, and subsequently find, all the expat
libs under the Apache source tree, though. At any rate, it certainly wasn't as dead simple as
the various instructions promised; either that or I am just Big Dummy.
