I have just spent 8 to 10 hours chasing down an installation problem on Windows. The problem turned
out to be that Bill Gate's crew allow multiple extensions to their file names. I followed the
examples about creating TEST.PHP using notepad and after installing and testing Apache2, and then
installing PHP I tried running the TEST.PHP and kept getting a 404 file not found. When I tried from
the same htdocs folder a known HTML it came up. This continued to happen after uninstalling and
reinstalling PHP. When I tried to run the file directly from the 'open with' it ran
although the command window closed immediately. Finally more by luck than judgement I discovered
this "great" feature of Windows if you do not uncheck show all file extensions in the
folder option it will in the case of Notepad append '.txt' after whatever extension you
apply such as '.php' but it does not show this condition anywhere. Even when you rename
the file it continues to add back that other extension so when you run Apache it parses and finds a
concatination of both extensions and therefore does not pass the file to PHP.
The major problem for me was the constant reference to: you must have all the dlls in this library
or that library, you must allow access by all users NTFS etc, so naturally I chased that route until
the accidental finding of the Window's feature.
