----
It is not clear what happens when the command cannot be executed.
Sometimes $return_var gets set to 126 and other times it gets set to 127.
It appears that if the command cannot be found then 127 is put in
$return_var. If the command cannot be executed (in my case due to
a missing library) then 126 is put in $return_var. In either case exec will
return an empty string and not output an error message. Also $output is
an empty array. I'm not sure if this is an undocumented feature or a bug.
