If you're want to use XML from a variable e.g. $xmldata but the XSLT-StyleSheet from a file,
you can do it also the following way:
<?php
$xslt = new xsltProcessor;
$xslt->importStyleSheet(DomDocument::load('filename.xsl'));
print $xslt->transformToXML(DomDocument::loadXML($xmldata));
?>
