ORBit (the ORB underlying Satellite) is also capable of accessing objects by passing a relatively
user-friendly URL pointing to the object's path in the naming service instead of a long and
obscure IOR. This is much more maintainable than hardcoding a IOR in PHP code, as the IOR contains
among other things information on an object server's hostname and port, which makes moving
objects around more difficult, not to mention the single point of failure issues involved.
Unfortunately there is a bug in ORBit with corbaname: and corbaloc: lookups.
This is because of a typo in some older versions of the Corba spec where the default port for the
Naming service was written as 2089 instead of the correct 2809.
One solution is to patch the file orb.c in ORBit. An alternative is to use the full corbaname: URL:
corbaname:iiop:1.0@nameservicehostname:2809#/path/to/object
I have submitted this issue to the ORBit maintainers, and hopefully it will be fixed soon.
