Regarding lack of br2nl()...
try this when re-displaying a string that has been altered by nl2br():
echo "<textarea name=body wrap=virtual cols=48 rows=12>";
$body = strip_tags($body);
$body = stripslashes($body);
echo $body;
echo "</textarea>\n";
Seemed to work for me...
