In addition to JC comment, about non US languages, I´m adding a specific
way of checking portuguese words, with JUST used characters, like ã, é, ú,
ô. In portuguese, the å or è is not used.
I suggest this expression:
$portuguese_expr='^[A-Za-zÁáÂâÃãÀàÉéÍíÓóÕõÔôÚúÜüÇç]{1,}$';
